Student Led Conferences

Why do students lead the conferences?

Student Led Conferences provides students the opportunity to take a more active role in the evaluation of their work and assists them in being more accountable for their learning. This style of conference creates a unique partnership between the home and school. The student presents to a teacher, her parents, and another staff member about her progress, strengths, challenges and goals for the remaining semester. Research and experience have demonstrated that student –led conferences offer many benefits including:

  • A stronger sense of accountability among students
  • A stronger sense of pride in achievement among students
  • A more productive student-teacher relationships
  • Development of leadership and public speaking skills
  • Greater parental participation in conferences

What does a student-led conference look like?

Students will deliver a power-point presentation highlighting their work in all of their classes. Students may demonstrate both work that they are proud of, and work that needs improvement. Students should explain what they have learned and goals they have set for themselves. Each conference will last approximately 20 minutes.
After your daughter has shared her work, you may want to ask questions like:

  • What can you tell me about this assignment?
  • What did you have to do to complete this assignment?
  • What skills did you learn or have to use?
  • What could you do next time to improve your work?
  • What is a goal that you have set to finish the school year?
  • How can I help you meet your goals?

What is the role of the Parent in the Student-Led Conference?

We believe that student-led conferences are an important part of the learning process, and we hope that all parents are able to participate. Your role is critical to the success of the conference. If a parent is unable to attend, we ask the student to bring another family member or adult advocate in your place.

  • Your first role is as a listener. Having a parent as the audience gives students a powerful reason to learn and work hard.
  • Your second role as a parent is to talk with your daughter about the work that is presented. You will gain a better understanding of what your daughter is learning, and the academic expectations of GLAAZ.
  • Your third role as a parent is to identify ways that you can support your daughter. This is an opportunity to discuss how you can help her achieve her goals, and find ways to work together.

What is the role of the Teacher in the Student-Led Conference?

Teachers have several roles in preparing for and conducting the conferences. Teachers make sure that all students know and can discuss their learning, and make sure that conference materials are available for students and parents. Teachers also may serve as facilitators to parents who need guidance finding ways to help their students. Teachers also help to facilitate and ensure successful communication.
